Railo 3.1 - it will be next year
Lately many people asked us about Railo 3.1 and the release date for it. We announced back in June that it will be November or so. We never thought there would be so huge positive reactions from the community. Because of that and because you can never make a first impression twice, we have postponed our release date for Railo 3.1.
We have made several improvements in the last 5 months in order to close the gap to CF8 and the anticipated CF9. Not only closing the gap but also dealing with several new customers and projects set us a little back on our track. Nevertheless we are hard working on the 3.1 alpha release. It will contain the basic structure of the 3.1 open source release with the extension manager that will allow you to upgrade your Railo version as desired. At the moment we are separating everything into core or non core (I feel like I am a member of the CFML advisory committee :-) ). The core will be open source and free and will be quite similar to the Community version of Railo 3.0. In addition you will be able to download and install several extensions in order to enhance your Railo installation. One thing I can already say is that there will be an Enterprise Package which contains all the non free extensions for the price of 1,999 US$.
The Enterprise Bundle on the other hand will contain a certain version of Fusion Reactor and Fusion Debug (Fusion Analytics will at first not be a part of it) for the price of 2,999 US$.
All extensions can be downloaded and installed separately. You will be able to buy extension packages as well like the "Clustering Package" or the "Multimedia package".
The Railo 3.1 OS version will contain BlazeDS which will be experimentally available in Railo 3.0.2 as well. In addition there will be the new database resource which will allow you to use a database as a virtual file system. Some additional configuration options will be available in the Administrators of Railo 3.1.
We are very confident that Railo 3.1 will be a huge success and that with the help of JBoss we will bring CFML to the attention it deserves.

Certainly exciting times for the CFML World!
You guys rock :-)
I've basically stopped dev. at non-work while I wait for this (there's no point writing the OpenAMF-based workarounds only to throw them away) so am really looking forward to it.
It's also the one of the main features that would stop us being able to look at Railo OS at work.
Like Tim says though, could you posit an updated time frame ?
Maybe you want to reconsider the package naming... Enterprise Package vs. Enterprise Bundle may confuse people. ;-)
but the importent steps are:
- opensouring the code (remove all restricted libs and reorganize the code)
- add support for blazeDS (AMF3)
- Extension Manager and more interfaces to extend/customize Railo (like dynamicly loading tag/function libraries and jars)
- support for cfc based customtag
...
You mean Railo is compatible with Adobe's CF debugging extensions for Eclipse ?
Gert
you guys are awesome!
have you tested it with Railo? At least Colbox is much faster because of the better CFC creation.
@Chris
Like usual, educational discount will be 50%
Gert
CFVideoplayer* will be a part of it. CFVIDEO on the other hand will be available as an extension for around 50US$.

My main comment is that for Railo to be successful you need to follow the lead of Luis Majano (at Coldbox) and have some good documentation. Especially important, I think, is to have a Getting Started doc for Linux, Windows, etc., that will explain and show "how to" get Railo up and running. Such simple things as getting Railo mappings to recognize files in a default IIS directory (c:/inetpub/wwwroot) would be much appreciated.
I know my boss briefly tried Railo on his WinXP laptop and when it didn't immediately recognize the root shown above he was ready to ditch it. He didn't want to move his files to the railo default dir and couldn't figure out how to set up another mapping. This all because there is no documentation with the download or anywhere on the site.
So, please, please get some documentation together for the sake of the Railo project.

Is there anyway to some notification service for the beta program or something ?
thanks a lot for all your comments. We try to heed all your hints and tips. There is lot to come this year from Railo. We are planning the public beta for February. By end of March we target the release of RC 1 of Railo 3.1 Open Source. Thanks again...
Gert
no, Hibernate will not be part of Railo 3.1 yet. But we're in the progress of involving it.
Gert
Any updates on the ETA of Railo 3.1 beta?
Thanks,
David
